West Coast MMA
Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), popularly known as cage fighting or ultimate fighting is a full contact combat sport that allows a wide variety of fighting techniques and skills, from a mixture of other combat sports, to be used in competitions. The rules allow the use of both striking as well as grappling techniques, both while standing and while on the ground. Such competitions allow fighters of different backgrounds to compete.
The roots of modern mixed martial arts can be traced back to various mixed style contests that took place throughout Europe, Japan and the Pacific Rim during the early 1900s. The combat sport of Vale Tudo that had developed in Brazil from the 1920s was brought to the United States by the Gracie family in 1993 with the founding of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Professional MMA events had also been held in Japan by Shooto starting back in 1989. In due course the more dangerous Vale Tudo style bouts of the early UFCs were made safer with the implementation of additional rules, leading to the popular regulated form of MMA seen today. Originally promoted as a competition with the intention of finding the most effective martial arts for real unarmed combat situations, competitors were pitted against one another with minimal rules. Later promoters adopted many additional rules aimed at increasing safety for competitors and to promote mainstream acceptance of the sport

Krav Maga comes to Ayrshire
Scottish Krav Maga Systems is delighted to announce the opening of the first Krav Maga class in Ayrshire. IKMF instructor Robert Bennett has started running classes at the WOSSOBAMA Gym each Friday 7pm to 9pm
Krav Maga is the self defence system created originally in the 1940’s by the Israeli military and developed for civilian use over the past 20 years by the International Krav Maga Federation (IKMF)
Krav Maga is a Life Skill which is easy to learn, with students becoming very proficient in a short space of time. It is not like a traditional Martial Art with flowing movements that can take years to perfect and master. Krav Maga techniques have been developed with the body’s natural reactions to threats or attacks to be used only if absolutely necessary.
With Krav Maga there are no rules, no limits, no hesitation and no holding back. The simple message is not to avoid getting hurt at any cost. Students are taught to use very simple techniques that include both defensive and offensive elements designed to protect you while ending a conflict as quickly as possible.
Krav Maga does not rely on strength which makes it ideal for female or younger students who may be faced with larger attackers. The system gives individuals a greater knowledge of how to neutralise a possible attack before anything happens, and how to avoid dangerous situations.
Robert Bennett commented “people will find Krav Maga classes very different to anything they have experienced before. We believe in training for very unpleasant situations in an informative and entertaining manner, which means the students learn quickly and enjoy themselves”
Fitness and strength are by-products of Krav Maga training with students reporting increased fitness and confidence within a surprisingly short space of time. For further details on Krav Maga or Krav Maga classes see www.scotkravmaga.com or call Robert Bennett on 0141 6383128.

Sparring.
Training is ongoing and sparring is an essential part especially if you wish to compete. It is hard work, dedication and discipline you require to achieve a high level of proficiency, and superior dedication is required to achieve consistent success in the ring. That being said, a basic understanding of Thai Boxing or other sparring styles and techniques is easily grasped and anybody can enjoy and benefit from these sessions. We have specific sessions for kids and adults sparring as well as sparring included in certain classes.
To perform techniques correctly you need a solid foundation of Muay Thai, MMA or Boxing basics. At first take things slowly and focus on the proper body movements. Take your time and focus on perfecting the techniques being taught; you will avoid picking up poor training habits which may be difficult to correct later on. As a combat athlete you will need to develop excellent balance, coordination, perfect timing, pin-point accuracy, speed and power. During training try to concentrate at all times, maintaining a constant state of readiness. Stamina is also very important but above all you need experience, this experience comes from many rounds of free sparring and/or competition.
Free sparring with a partner is an essential element of training. Through sparring you can correct yourself and find out which techniques work. The more you practice, the more you build confidence, perfecting your techniques at the same time. During training sparring is always controlled, this is especially true if your opponent is lighter than you, less experienced, lacks confidence or is younger. You must control your power, use light contact and make a note of which techniques do or do not work and always control your temper.
Should you wish to compete in competitions in Thai Boxing (Muay Thai) then we have one of the most successful fight teams in the UK, we have produced some of the best fighters in the UK at junior and senior level competing as far afield as Thailand. We have won more than 50 titles now at Scottish, British, K1 or Challenge level. For more information speak to the staff at the gym.
