INSTRUCTORS
Wossobama Gym offers a wide range of services & classes. Our staff conducts all services relating to the fitness & gym areas and specifically gym memberships, gym inductions, sales, personal training and advice etc.
Wossobama Gym offer a wide range of classes in various martial arts and disciplines, all taught by Gym staff & independent instructors who hire our studio facility, they are all of the very highest calibre. Many of the coaches have competed and trained others at the very highest level of their sport. We have produced many champions and are regarded as one of the top gyms in the UK for Muay Thai.
We also teach Jiu-Jitsu, MMA, Boxing, Female Muay Thai, Combative Edge, Krav Maga and Kids martial arts classes including techniques in; Kids Thai Boxing, Kids Self Defence, Kids Kickboxing, Kids Boxing, Junior competition training and the ‘Kids Beat the Bullies’ programme which Alan Currie started many years ago.
The aim is to bring a high level of knowledge into the classes and make it accessible for all gym members and class users. The classes while taught expertly aim to be fun and of course to give you a great workout. You’ll learn real skills and techniques but also get in the best shape of your life.

Placed 25th in his first scottish triathlon championships ( a one mile reservoir swim started the event in arbroath, jaws was spotted!!)

Andrea Smith – Female Only Thai Boxing.
Andrea has trained for many years in various martial arts; Aikido, Jiu-Jitsu, Boxing and mainly Muay Thai, she has taught Muay Thai for over 12 years to women of all levels; from women looking to tone up or enter the pro fighting ring.
Andrea trains herself regularly in Muay Thai and is always willing to help beginners and more advanced females with her up to date knowledge of Muay Thai. Andrea has trained at the world famous Fairtex camp in Bangplee, Bangkok – Thailand, learning some new skills etc and has also trained in Thai camps in Koh Samui and Phuket. Andrea graded to 1st Degree Red armband (1st Dan) many years ago. She is certified to teach, insured and complies with all the teachers criteria set by the S.T.B.A.
Ally Smith – Thai Classes and Sparring Classes.
Ally has been passionate about all things fitness and martial arts since a young age starting Karate at the local school at age 9 grading to his brown belt. He started Thai Boxing in 1998 at age 15 under the tutelage of Alan Currie achieving his Red khan in 3 years of training and has since graded to 4th degree Red Armband equivalent to 4th Dan Black Belt. Ally also started competing professionally after a year of training. He has now racked up 30 fights professionally winning against European opponents, winning the STBA Scottish Title and defending it, WMC Scottish Title, IFMA Scottish Title , Northern Area Title, Thaisport British Title and the best of all the UKMF (United Kingdom Muaythai Federation) British Title in November 2009 against Marc Sargeant. The Independent British rankings also put Ally at Number 1 in the UK as of June 2010.
He has taught Muaythai and self defence to all levels in the gym for over ten years and also to youth groups for the local council and taught in schools to classes of 50 kids as part of a Health Week programme. He has also taught self defence and Thai boxing for the Active Schools initiative set up by South Ayrshire council. Ally has an HND in sports coaching with development from Kilmarnock College and gained experience teaching all sports to youths, women and people with impairments.
Ally reads all available resources about training, diet, weight loss and injury prevention and rehabilitation so his knowledge base is excellent. While studying for his HND; Ally also picked up coaching qualifications in a variety of sports such as athletics, basketball, American football and volleyball. He has also achieved his British Weightlifting Association Instructors Award which is a very difficult course on the Olympic lifts and in depth human physiology. He can teach the Olympic Lifts, the Snatch and the Clean and Jerk and their variants, to any sports person looking for increased power, explosiveness and speed.
Ally has also gained valuable knowledge on Kettlebell lifting and now teaches a class in the gym. His Kettlebell class covers all the main kettlebell lifts such as snatches, swings, squats, lunges, clean and press, windmills and Turkish Get Ups. No kettlebell class is ever the same which provides a great break from the normal gym session. This is a great fat burning and toning workout for men and women looking for something different to spice up their workouts.
Ally is the full time gym manager and his role is to oversee the running of all classes and gym activities and ensure everyone has a great visit each time they use the gym. Paul Kelly – Kids Classes, Thai Boxing Classes.
The youngest member of the WOSSOBAMA GYM staff, Paul teaches the kids classes and also the beginners and intermediate Thai boxing classes for adults. Paul started Muaythai at age 11 at the WOSSOBAMA GYM working his way up the grading syllabus and competing in junior bouts winning a Junior Scottish title before moving up to the senior level and won his first ten professional fights in a row.
Paul has had over 25 professional fights winning the Thaisport Scottish Title and defending it successfully. Paul also fought for the WKA (World Kickboxing Association) British Title but lost on points against tough opponent Karl Copestake. He has defeated European and World Champion Mati Parks and fought Richard Cadden who is also a multiple World Title holder. The British Independent Rankings had Paul ranked Number 7 in the UK as of June 2010.
Paul passed his 2nd Degree Red Armband in Muay Thai equivalent to 2nd Dan Black Belt recently and is also completing his BWLA weightlifting instructor’s exam. Having taught for only 5 years, Paul is an excellent instructor having taught in schools to children of all ages, primary and secondary, youth groups and for the local council gaining valuable knowledge and practical teaching experience. Paul ensures the kid’s classes are fun and interesting for all ages and contain grading work to increase the children’s skill and application of Thai boxing.
Thai Boxing Beginner classes are accessible to all regardless of age or fitness level anyone can join in. The intermediate level is for adults who have moved up the grading syllabus working towards higher grades and increasing their Thai boxing skill and technical proficiency.
David Bowie – Thai Boxing, Sparring Classes.
David started Muaythai boxing at age 12 under the tuition of Alan Currie he started Thai boxing to channel his boisterous energy. He has now trained in the sport for over 17 years and graded to 2nd Degree Red Armband, Equivalent to 2d Dan Black Belt. He currently holds the Thaisport British title at 67kg. He is available for one to one sessions for fitness and teaches the Muay thai sparring classes.
Tommy Mitchell – Jiu Jitsu.
Tommy is a well respected martial artist around the country and runs very successful jiu-jitsu classes. He is kubotan & PR24 trained since 2001, nunchaku since 2003.
In 2000 he was runner up in the Perth all styles full contact championships. He won 1st place (middleweight) Jiu Jitsu open martial arts championship 2001. Before studying jiu jitsu tommy was a junior brown belt at Shoukai Karate and a green belt at Tae Kwon Do (ttf). He is currently 1st Dan Jiu Jitsu since 2000.
Tommy trained with professor Keido Yamaue in 2001, and has attended numerous seminars with Sensie Alan Campbell (8th Dan) who is the national jiu jitsu coach.
Andy Wilson – MMA.
Andy Wilson is a well accomplished martial artist, he has trained in martial arts for over 22 years in many styles including; Aikido, BJJ, Kickboxing, Boxing, Karate, Budo, Judo and Kung-Fu. His main system of training is combat submission wrestling which was founded by Erik Paulson who Andy has links with. Andy has had several pro MMA fights as a heavy weight and is undefeated to date.
Andy’s excellent teaching ability allows any student to pick up MMA skills very quickly, he is available for one – one tuition also at the gym most days.
Robert Bennett – Krav Maga.
Robert Bennett discovered Krav Maga late 2008 when attended a seminar conducted by Eyal Yanilov, then of the International Krav Maga Federation.
Robert has been trained in Shotokan Karate for nearly 20 years ,currently holds a 3rd Dan ranking and is also a level 2 Karate coach .
“As a father of three I realised that a lot of what I was teaching , whilst relevant in the dojo and on the competition mat, may not be effective for the street- Krav Maga seemed to provide those solutions!” Robert then commenced twice weekly training sessions, quickly moving up the grades with a view to having his own Krav Maga classes. Robert completed and passed the IKMF’s 23 day Civilian Instructors Course required to reach Krav Maga earlier this year and the Wossobama class was his first class to open.

Ricky Weatherston – Boxing.
Ricky Weatherston has been training in martial arts and boxing for over 20 years and has been teaching in the Wossobama gym for over 7 years. He started training boxing at the age of 16 and by the age of 17 he stumbled upon the art of Thai boxing. Ricky’s training has seen him under a number of instructors, the first 3 years of his Thai being under world renound Thai instructor Master Sken.
After a year’s break from training he found his way back and trained under John Craig and, his now good friend, Alan Currie. It was with Alan that he achieved his second degree red armband (equal to 2nd dan).
Ricky has been involved in a number of public displays and has taught closed door classes for charity groups. He has attended a number of seminars and training workshops over the years and will continue to do so.
Darren Robbins – Combative edge.
Darren Robbins is a well accomplished martial artist, he has trained in Martial Arts for over 20 years in many styles including, Western Boxing, Judo, Jun Fan Gung-Fu Jeet Kune Do, Filipino Martial Arts(Weaponry & Empty Hand), Indonesian Martial Arts(Weaponry & Empty Hand), Thai/Kickboxing, Jun-Fan Grappling, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.Over the Years Darren has trained with some of the finest Martial Artists from around the Globe & hosts regular Guest Instructor Seminars/Workshops at Wossobama Gym so other people can experience first hand World Class tuition by Experts in there chosen field.
Classes are tought in a relaxed atmosphere and Darrens excellent teaching ability makes it easy to learn and adapt and use as your own in the various ranges of combat.
